Why I am crazy about Croatia
I am not crazy about Croatia, I am ga-ga about the place, I am hooked on it, I am addicted to this land. She is under my skin. I dream about her day and night. No sooner am I back when I start thinking about next year's visit. From all the places that I have visited, and where I have lived, it is the most beautiful country in the world. A few years ago I was sitting in my hostel in Budapest, when Dominic walked in. He was from Zagreb and "escaped" because of girlfriend problems. We hit it off, spend ...
The Czech Republic
Many years ago, a friend called me when he got back from a visit to Prague. He swooned about how beautiful the place was. My response? “Once you have visited the REAL Europe, talk to me!" (I was, of course, referring to Western Europe). When I eventually made my way to Prague, I was so ashamed of such a narrow-minded view … remember that piece on ethnocentricity? Well, even I can be guilty of that … that’s why one has to guard against it. Now, with that out of the way, back to Prague (the first time, in 2007). We flew ...
The Netherlands
I have visited the Netherlands many times and enjoy every visit. It seems like I discover new things every time. Be it my South African background, but I really like the place. The FOOD. The PEOPLE. Just every thing. The Dutch are very hospitable people and their food incredible. A huge variety, well prepared and very, very tasty. They like their spices … check out the history of the Dutch East Indian Company and you will also understand why Van Riebeeck was sent to South Africa. The Netherlands is a small and flat country. The Dutch have been very successful in ...
Italy
What can I say? Unparalleled beauty. Incredible food. HUGE country. Craziest drivers one will ever encounter. Visit Italy and be prepared to be homesick for a very, very long time once you get back. OK, let’s get the touristy stuff out of the way. Venice … I suppose one has to visit this city. The old adage, “See Venice and die,” did not hold true for me. I HATED the place! Why? Over commercialized and the place stinks. It is damn expensive and those gondoliers and their gondolas? Well, I cannot really say how I feel about them, as I may ...
Croatia
NOTE OF INTEREST: The former Yugoslavia, was split into seven countries (capital in parentheses): Bosnia & Herzegovina (Sarajevo); Croatia (Zagreb); Kosovo (Pristina); Macedonia (Skopje); Montenegro (Podgoria); Serbia (Belgrade) and Slovenia (Ljubjana). A few years ago I was in my hostel in Budapest when the door opened and this young man, Dominic, walked in. We started talking … he told me he was from Croatia and that it was surely the most beautiful country in the world. Nevertheless, we went out that night, had a few beers and a pizza and he told me about his country. He left the next day for ...

When I was in Belgrade, it was hot. Unbelievably hot. One day it was too hot to venture outside and I stayed in the room (great hotel room with AC for $12/night). After three days I started to move onto Sarajevo in Bosnia. Another long (once again nearly 12 hours) train ride for under $20. The train reminded me of one from the movie, “Dr Zhivago”... It was in Dubrovnik that I made up my mind NOT to go to Italy. I was enjoying the Adriatic so much and was not ready to give it up. Yes, I have been told how gorgeous the Amalfi Coast and Sorrento were and Rome is my favorite CITY … but there is always next year ( and for those of you who asks: “You did not go to Italy and stayed in the former Yugoslavia?”... After studying three months abroad, herewith Stephanie Vegliante’s last piece. Thanks Ms Vegliante. Based on all the students who came and talk to me about your experience(s), I know I am not the only one who enjoyed this! My trip to study abroad began just over 3 months ago in Boston. It was a huge culture shock, as being on the island for over... [Read more of this review]
I took the BUS from Korcula to Dubrovnik … yeah, one has to get the bus onto a ferry (for a short ride) and then hit the mainland. Once again, the ride was something to remember. It would seem that it does not matter where, but as long as one travel the Croatian coastline, one simply cannot go wrong. It was, like all others before, jaw dropping. Marija... The gravatar depicts a calla lilly … what the hell has that got to do with Croatia, and in particular, Croatian islands? It is NOT a calla, it is an arum lilly which is indigenous to South Africa and this pic was taken at Luka’s Lodge where I was preparing the beer butt chicken, thus I could not resist the moment of being watched by a beautiful... From Zadar I took the bus to Trogir. Now I know I am starting to sound like a worn out gramophone record (like any of my students will know what that is!) but the bus ride between Zadar and Trogir was …………… (please fill in an appropriate adjective, I have run out). The Garden Route in South Africa is widely considered as one of the most scenic... [Read more of this review]
